There’s a lot of talk about how children are the future, and unfortunately in some cases it’s merely just talk. Not at Camper and Nicholsons (CNI), however. The company is making a concerted effort to help inner-city kids get a leg up on life. CNI has partnered with the nonprofit organization CampInteractive to get more of them out on the ocean.
CampInteractive sponsors year-long programs that stress two seemingly unrelated subjects. The organization’s motto is, “stepping back into nature and forward into technology.” It believes that when kids venture both into the wild and onto the Web, they learn innovative thinking, teamwork, and confidence. That therefore leads to improved grades and broadened horizons for their future.
CampInteractive has met with success in cities such as New York. CNI is helping it expand its reach through CampInteractive Miami, which will put a big emphasis on the water. While kids will be able to learn things like swimming, they’ll also learn how to maintain a PWC, handle a boat, and even fish. They’ll be equipped with digital cameras while on the water, documenting their adventures. Finally, back on terra firma, they’ll learn to build Web sites around these experiences.
